These ideas were first based on a large research project into national culture differences across subsidiaries of a multinational corporation (IBM) in 64 countries. These four national culture’s dimensions were later extended by the fifth, which wasn’t part of original Hofstede’s study and is called long-term versus short-term orientation - originally, called Confucian dynamism (Hofstede and Bond, 1984).
