On July 6, 2016, the European Parliament set into policy the Directive on Security of Network and Information Systems (the NIS Directive). The directive went into effect in August 2016, and all member states of the European Union were given 21 months to incorporate the directive's regulations into their own national laws. According to the Irish Government's Spring / Summer 2017 legislative programme it is intended that the Cyber Security Bill (not yet published) will transpose the NIS Directive. According to the consultation paper, the drafting of the legislation to transpose the NIS Directive (the Cyber Security Bill) will be concluded by March / April 2018. This incoming regulatory regime is called the Network and Information Systems Directive (“ NIS Directive ”) and the Irish legislation implementing the NIS Directive (“ NIS Regulations ”) was signed into law in September of this year.
